The Ladies League's Got Talent! Thanks again to Kim for sharing her wonderful cookies at our Annual Banquet.
August 29, 2024 (NR) - Well, based on the gap in announcements, August was a busy month! Anyway, lots of things have happened since July 28th! Take a moment to browse the website to learn more. Note to potential new members: please reach out via the contact page to let us know you are interested and try to get a couple of scores from the Groton CC course for placement purposes. In the meantime, enjoy what is left of the summer, year, and upcoming Holidays. Hope to see you in 2025!
July 28, 2024 (NR) - Whoa! We had 4 chip-in winners last week: Linda Brattica, Kathy Hebb, Donna Grimes, and Lori Seppala. Your winnings will be kind of small after splitting the pot, but you do still have bragging rights! Announcement of the winners of the 3-Club Tournament will be kept under wraps until the banquet. IMPORTANT NOTE: This week there will be a final adjustment to the A-D levels of each team depending on HANDICAPS. I am working hard to fully update the team standing spreadsheet through the July 15th matches by the end of the day. It will not be updated again until after the banquet to maintain an element of surprise and to avoid the mindset that a team doesn’t stand a chance of placing. Play hard until the bitter end ladies!
July 21, 2024 (NR) - Congratulations for 2 chip-ins last week: Traci Quin and Lisa Krywucki. TIP-OF-THE-WEEK: Did you know that a player is limited to no more than 14 clubs in a round of golf? It is a USGA rule. With all of the new types of clubs recently invented to improve your game there are no shortages of clubs available to choose from (Drivers, Woods, Irons 3 – 9 and their Hybrid partners, Pitching, Approach, Gap, and Sand Wedges, Putters, Lori’s “Chip Junior” and Traci’s chipper (with a right AND left-hand option). How many clubs are in your bag? Keep this in mind when you are playing in any official tournaments or competitive golf matches.
July 14, 2024 (NR) - Congratulations to Mihoko for her EAGLE on Hole 1 last week! That is the first of the season and the only one that I am aware of since I have been paying attention. There were none last year. What does it take to get an EAGLE on a par 4, you ask? Well, it takes a CHIP-IN! Congrats to the other CHIP-IN winners from last week too: Chris MacKinnon, and Donna-Sue Morton. Our TIP-OF-THE-WEEK centers around pace-of-play. These tips have been added to the MATCH PLAY FORMAT tab.
July 7, 2024 (NR) - I just wanted to publicly acknowledge the great golf that occurred last week. There were several TIE scores and “personal bests” for the season (you all know who you are). Congrats to Traci for chipping in; she was the only winner. TIP OF THE WEEK: Now that we are ½ way into the season it might behoove you to take a quick glance at the RULES that have been tailored to our league and/or the Groton CC course. For newbies, now that you have encountered “situations” and know the lay of the land, the rules might start to make more sense. And for veteran leaguers, you may actually be playing by an outdated, or assumed, set of rules. While you’re there, check out the MATCH PLAY FORMAT tab too.
June 30, 2024 (NR) - Can you believe that tomorrow is July 1st? We are half way through our competitive matches. Congrats to our longest drive winner last week, Sarah Kinghorn, and several chip-in winners (Chrissy, Sarah, Melissa, and Carol Micci). AND... HAPPY 4th of JULY everyone! TIP OF THE WEEK: “Cart Management”: While not always obvious, especially to beginner golfers, there is an unspoken, graceful dance that happens each week. Positioning your golf cart/bag in such a way that keeps it out of the way of your foursome, as well as the approaching team behind you, while also maintaining the forward flow of the game is actually a learned skill. When approaching the green, try to place your cart in such a way that it lines up with where you need to go next (if reasonably possible). This also helps with pace-of-play.
June 23, 2024 (NR) - I am excited to announce our 1st Annual LONGEST DRIVE competition and can't wait to see who wins! Please do not make any assumptions, even the strongest players can SLICE the ball! Also, if the longest drive marker interferes with your swing, etc., please see our: TIP OF THE WEEK: Every now and then there are objects that interfere with your stance, ability take a full swing, or block the line of your shot. In some cases, you can move the obstruction, like those directional cart signs or hoses, but in other cases it is simply impossible. Here is the good news… If the obstruction happens to be “man-made”, you can obtain relief for FREE (meaning, without taking a penalty stroke)! Please see our RULES page for more info on this and other interesting rules.
June 9, 2024 (NR) - Congrats to Kathy Hebb and Linda Bratica for chipping in last week! The good news for Kathy is that she gets to keep all of the loot because Linda forgot to put in her $1 ☹. Also, this week's match is going to be a RED, WHITE, and BLUE scramble. Please see the SCRAMBLES page for more info. TIP OF THE WEEK: In a scramble, the “best ball” might not always be the furthest ball. There is a strategy involved when every player’s tee off should be used at least once. There is a lot of pressure on a player that MUST perform well on the last hole. You might want to consider ensuring that all player’s tee offs are chosen by the 6th or 7th hole.
June 2, 2024 (NR) - After tomorrow's match, we will have scores for all of the May rounds and team standings will start to materialize. We will also revisit the handicap situation and possibly make some adjustments to the A, B, C, and D players on your team. TIP OF THE WEEK:My favorite rule… the “unplayable lie”.It is not free but can rescue you from lots of unfortunate situations. It will cost you a stroke BUT, in my experience, trying to play it can often result in more strokes than the penalty! The best part about the rule is that it is your call. You get to decide if the ball is unplayable and can move the ball up to two-club lengths (but no closer to the hole) from the unplayable area.
May 19, 2024 (NR) - Congratulations to Tammy Ashworth for chipping in last week. Also, here is our... TIP OF THE WEEK: There are no “gimmies” in our competitive league. You must sink the ball each time. Also, the main person who should be providing a “nod of approval” in questionable situations is your opponent. This may extend to the group if she is unsure of how to handle the situation OR simply not there.
May 13, 2024 (NR) - TIP OF THE WEEK: Score keepers have a slight advantage over the opponents. Please make the scorecard accessible to your opponent so that they fully understand the handicap situation and the scores, at any point during the round. It is also a best practice to verbally state your score to your opponent, and foursome, so that everyone is on the same page.
May 6, 2024 (NR) - .What a great day for our first competitive match! 75 degrees and sunny. Woo-hoo! We also had two chip-ins: Beth Parsons and Patty Jackson. They get to split the jackpot which has been growing for 3 weeks.
April 29, 2024 (NR) - Tonight's match is going to be a non-competitive scramble. There is no prize $, just go out an play. Above all, have fun! You will be playing against an opponent starting next Monday (May 6th). Please take a moment to review the MATCH PLAY tab. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out. See you tonight... with my cell phone to start to take pictures for the webpage (dress accordingly)!
April 20, 2024 (NR) - P.S. If you would like to pay your membership dues this week, Marie will be available to accept them. If it makes life more convenient to Venmo the payment, send it to @Marie-Wojtas
April 19, 2024 (NR) - Our league starts next week!! April 22nd. It will be an informal, non-competitive round just to refresh your memories. New players should keep a score that reflects a game played according to our league's rules. This will help to establish a realistic handicap that much sooner. It takes 3 scores to make a handicap official. Also, we will be seeking head shot photos for the webpage. You can also submit your own photo or we can simply keep last year's photo until a replacement is provided. Email to follow. Looking forward to seeing everyone.
March 24th (NR) - While our league might be FULL for the 2024 season, you never know what the future holds and there can be unexpected openings. If you would like to be added to our stand-by list, please let us know through the contact page. Also, for beginner golfers, there are non-competitive, summer and fall leagues at the Billerica Country Club. It is a great way to start playing regularly and gain some confidence.
March 14th (NR) - There has been a lot of interest in our league this year and we are looking forward to the start of the season. For people who might have missed the window of opportunity to join our league this year, but think you may still be interested next year, it would be a good idea to familiarize yourself with this entire webpage and make an effort to golf at the Groton CC course this summer to get a sense of your score(s). Keep those score cards! This is extremely helpful in selecting and placing new members.
March 2024 (NR) - Answers to some FAQ's: Our league will officially start on April 22nd... (April 15th is a Holiday). The cost to join our league is $50 for the 2024 season. Players will also pay for the cost to play golf on each Monday, directly at the Groton CC pro-shop ($20 per 9 holes + $10 cart fee, if desired).
February 2024 (NR) - Hello everyone, I am just waking up from hibernation! Shortly, the 2023 members will be receiving an email gauging their intent to return this year. Once we obtain the numbers we will reach out to people who have indicated a desire to join our league in the order in which their communications have been received. All interested parties, whether friends of members or not, should send an email through our contact page on this website. This ensures that inquires are time-stamped and fair to everyone. Someone will be checking and acknowledging receipt on a weekly basis. - Looking forward to seeing everyone soon!
